Better late than never

Many of you have heard by now about the crazy storm we had here a couple weeks ago.  It was called a derecho (something none of us have heard about- even the spell check here is telling me that it's not a word!).  But it's basically a huge line of wind and thunderstorms, and they happen suddenly.  We had no idea what we were in for!
On that Friday night we were taking care of Sandy's kids so that Sandy and Jon could go out for their anniversary.  All the kids were in bed and I went to bed somewhat early while Chris was downstairs taking his final exam for a class.  I fell asleep FAST.  But not too long after I woke up to the most awful sounds of trees falling, wind blowing so hard (80 mph), and intense rain.  Since I was so fast asleep, I was not in my right frame of mind.  I grabbed Cora and ran downstairs and said, "Honey, I think it's the apocalypse!"  I was scared out of my mind.  The next 30 minutes I spent watching the trees and praying that nothing would fall on our house.  In the morning Evie and I walked around the neighborhood to survey the damage.  It was bad.  I couldn't believe how many cars were totaled, huge established trees had uprooted.  But miraculously, none of our houses were too badly damaged.  And since our neighborhood has underground electric lines, we never lose power, which is a huge blessing!  My sister and her family ended up staying with us for the weekend since theirs was out and it was over 100 degrees that weekend.  But all in all, it was a fun adventure, and we were so thankful for all the hard workers that were out there in the heat and humidity to clean up the mess for us.

This poor tree welcomed everyone to the neighborhood.  I'm going to miss it.

Wouldn't you love to wake up and see your car like this?

After some men worked all day on cutting another tree that blocked a cul-de-sac

This was only 1 of many cars damaged by this tree
